BIOGRAPHY
Tom Kingston is a versatile and dynamic composer and producer, simultaneously lauded for his commercial releases as one half of duo Solomon Grey, as well as for his composition for television and film - now his primary focus since the band’s hiatus in 2021. Combining his classical and jazz training with a wealth of experience in contemporary music production, Tom is equally at home working with leading orchestras, classical ensembles and musicians as he is harnessing electronic, experimental and produced sounds in the studio - often combining elements from both worlds to powerful effect.
Now based in Australia, but continuing to work with clients in America, the UK and around the world, Tom builds on a lifelong passion for making music, bringing an irrepressible enthusiasm and love of his craft to every project. Reflecting on his experience over the last couple of years, he says:
“It has been hugely exciting to fully return to my childhood passion, composition, but with the benefit of the rich and varied musical experience I’ve gained as an artist over the last few years. I’ve built the confidence to work very instinctively with story and picture - to fully trust in the creative process which unfolds in finding the sonic identity every piece needs and deserves.”
Tom recently finished scoring the major docuseries The World According To Football for Showtime and Paramount+. The show, executive produced and narrated by Trevor Noah, went to air in the United States in December 2023, with the OST released on prestigious soundtrack label Lakeshore Records in March this year. In April his debut feature-film as a solo composer, US indie movie Mabel, received its world-premiere at San Francisco International Film Festival. The quirky story, of a nature-obsessed tweenager whose best friend is a potted plant, is beautifully accompanied by Tom’s poignant chamber score performed by the acclaimed London Contemporary Orchestra. Other notable credits include Broadcast Award-nominated BBC comedy Ladybaby, where Tom melded an eclectic combination of retro toy glockenspiel, vintage home-organ and Hawaiian-style steel guitar to perfectly and uniquely capture the tragi-comic mood.
Tom also continues to find success in synch, his songs and compositions chosen to accompany a huge range of trailers, adverts and notable moments in TV and film. He struck gold in early in 2021 when one of his first solo-piano works featured in a key scene of Oprah Winfrey’s iconic interview with Meghan and Harry, whilst later the same year his collaboration with electronic artist Conrad Clifton ‘(Get It) Kraken Mare’ soundtracked the official trailer for Starz TV series Blindspotting. Meanwhile, Solomon Grey productions have been heard on trailers for Netflix movie The Dig, HBO series The Time Travellers’ Wife and Palme d’Or winner Dheepan, high-profile promos for Playstation VR and Vue Cinemas, as well as memorable scenes in TNT’s Animal Kingdom, Starz’ Power, ABC’s How To Get Away With Murder, Sky’s Long Way Up and many more.
Tom continues:
“I’m passionate about making music that is fulfilling, music that resonates, music that connects with something deeper. As a composer I want to continue to work together with like-minded creatives on interesting and progressive ideas - unique stories and subjects that have an emotional heart and soul that I can explore, articulate and bring to life with the music I write.”
Tom’s music is memorable, visceral and original - and always elegantly captures and enhances the essence of the story or subject on the screen, large or small. His range and talent as a composer and producer is unquestionably an asset to any project, as is the value he brings as part of a wider creative team.
